As graceful and easy as ballet may seem, it requires a great deal of practice and dedication to be able to pull off the moves and techniques, like pirouettes and battement en cloche. Difficult as it might be for adults, it's even more difficult for kids who are faced with the hard work early on, needing lots of stamina, perseverance, and in particular the structure and discipline of the dance itself. Sometimes, despite the talent they may have, kids might want to quit out of the blue, and while it's not okay to force them to continue just because you dream of having a daughter successful as a ballerina, you can at least try and motivate them as best you can.
For starters, make every new move they master in rehearsal or a recital participation comes out good a reason to celebrate and reward them - any improvement is a success no matter how small or big. There are many accessories and unique ballet toys you can treat them with, like the colourful unicorn plush dolls wearing tutu. Motivation is highly welcome but not if you're doing it every single time they have ballet class, just to get them in the mood to even go to the studio. Gifts like unicorn plush dolls and other ballet-related items aside, it's up to you to find out what it is they actually like about ballet in the first place. Maybe it's wearing the lovely shoes and tutus, listening to the music, being in the company of friends, or some moves; whatever it is, work on keeping their enthusiasm high using this as the means. You'd also be able to make some progress by leading by example, joining up for a class or two, or practicing at home trying out the moves with them. It's about showing them ballet can be fun and enjoyable. A bit of competition is good yet it's always better to compete with oneself, so inspire your kids to strive to perform better for themselves, improving by comparing their old beginners' way of dancing with the new and refined instead of nurturing feelings of rivalry competing with other dancers. An important lesson to teach them right from the start is that not everything is about winning because losing has its value too, more so when it means trying to work harder to improve and not quit at the first obstacle. Show them you're proud of them no matter what. Comments are closed.
